While at Okayama University I ventured outside for my academic comfort zone and endeavored and eventually got to work with/under Dr. Yunlian Chen a Professor at OU who specialized in Urban Development, and Traditional Architecture.
Under their knowledgeable tutelage I did field research on Traditional Japanese architecture and Inaka revitalization efforts in Iwami Ginzan in Shimane, Kurashiki in Okayama, and Yakage in Okayama. Iwami Ginzan was a mining town that was trying to incorporate traditional buildings refurbished traditionally into the revitalization effort to make the town into a new tourist destination centered around their new UNESCO heritage site.
I finished the (EPOK) program having written my thesis on Minka(民家) which roughly translates to “house of the people” and how tradition and revitalization was at odds with each other.
